** Always backup your box and then you can trial & error with it later. :) **
** Again thank you all for contributing and sharing, hope my experience help too **
**  I am using Valore Titanium Mini-Bluetooth Keyboard with Presenter (V-BTK350) with my mi box **

A. Installation:

After the inital setups are done on the box with the cables fitted and current mode is in a non 'jailbreak' and a 'unroot' box. Let explain on this 2 term here.
  • Jailbreak allow you to install 3rd party apps to the box. Jailbreak is not equal to root.
  • Unroot means you do not have the full privilege on the box and you do not have full system access. Therefore obtain root is important over here, because with root access than can have the full system access to the box.

Comparison to the all 3 Mi Box:

B. Jailbreak:

I started next to do jailbreak, I actually do a lot research on this by Googling all about jailbreak on xiaomi box pro/enhanced or jailbreak mi box pro/enhanced. Google return with many results/information.. The the best online teaching guide are in chinese or in cantonese. But no worry, let do Jailbreak with youtube instead.

  • Jailbreak is allowing you to install 3rd party apps to the box.

  • Below are the method you perform jailbreak:
  • Copy the apps to a MircoUSB and install through the box app
  • Copy the apps to micro sd-card and install through the box app
  • install via a 3rd party phone manager and install the apps (I am not going to touch on this, but there are application like Snappea and QQ phone manager, just google it)
  • Connect the box with the usb connector and perform adb command to install the application((I am not going to touch on this, as there are straight forward methods and files you obtain from the below youtube link or links directing to download)

Due to policies/rules of this forum, I am making changes but I must give credit to the the maker of the video.

  • Here are the youtube showing the on changing your user interface from Chinese to English and installing 3rd party apps (Credit to Philip Pang)

C. Rooting:

Once you have the UI in English or the language you understand and jailbreak is done, let root the box. I actually do a lot research on topic too.  Google return with many results/information.. The the best online teaching guide are in chinese or in cantonese again. But no worry use Google translation. Please do take note there are different version of root package for different version of firmware/rom that install on the box.

Changes done on 4th Dec 2014 0136hr SGT:
Due to policies/rules of this forum, I am making changes but I must give credit to the developer and also the allowing user to know where the real source of information is from. Please refer to my own translated guide on the Rooting_Guide.docx

You will need to connect the usb cable from the Mi box to your laptop/pc usb port and carry out the rooting procedures.

D. Discover and Backup:

Once you have rooted the box, connect via the adb shell. Then you should see what partition the box have, so you can backup them as recovery images. Below are the commands to discover the partition and the rest of the details. (but I have yet change to su(super user) or root user yet)

shell@dredd:/ $ cat /proc/partitions
cat /proc/partitions

E. Installing Google Apps:

At last we have complete backing up the partition, let move on to install the Google framework and Googleservices. Why installing Google apps on the box? Reason, I want to sign on to my YouTube so that my daughter can watch the collection and playlist I createdfor her on Barney. (",). So again there are research and found many waysto install Google framework and Google services, but non allow me to sign in. It always come back to"account cannot connect to server". Fortunately I found the way:

  • Install Xiaomi Market on box, as I am more familar with this apps. (",)
  • Secondly search Google on the Xiaomi on the box
  • Install the 谷歌安装器

    谷歌安装器

    谷歌安装器
    known as 'Google installer
   OR
   3. Download and install the apk file from link: http://app.mi.com/detail/72142

(**Reason why you need this Google installer apk, is that it will 'unblocked' the network route to Google server using another apk which it will prompt to install. Is known in chinese as FQ路由器 and on Google store is known as fqrouter2 here the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fq.router2&hl=en. It will prompt you to install fqrouter2 app when there a block to the Google server, during the check**)

   4. Run the 谷歌安装器 after installing and run the checks. It will prompt to install fqrouter2 if is not getting the response to the Google server. Once the route is cleared, you can remove fqrouter2 apps, as is only used in China to clearing routing to Google server.

   5. Next Install Xposed Framework and HDXposed apps.
(**Remember to follow the instruction and reboot after the apps is installed**)
   6. Once complete you can install Youtube and Chrome via a installer known as 谷歌应用下载器

谷歌应用下载器

谷歌应用下载器

found on xiaomi market.
       Or
   6. Download and install the apk file from link: http://app.mi.com/detail/36925
for the 谷歌应用下载器 - Google installer(again).
   7. Login to your Goolge account, if you face error on "
account cannot connect to server", use the apps 谷歌安装器 and fqrouter2 to confirming routing is cleared to Google server. Then recheck the Xposed Framework and HDXposed apps is active and running probably.

Summary:

All the above cover:
A. Installation
B. Jailbreak
C. Rooting
D. Discover and Backup
E. Installing Google Apps

Once you have complete all the above, you should have access to your Google account and a Mi Box which is jailbreak and rooted.

** All apps use on the above for the box can be download from this link: https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=F8AAA9F96C9C7172&id=F8AAA9F96C9C7172!276 (Look under each folder for the apps you want to download) **

**To all who is reading, the reason why I am not attaching apk files here and not enforcing credit to be deducted for each download /reply, is I hope more people can access to good apps/toolkit without userid access to the forum and enjoy the technology of Mi gadgets. The reason to directing to other sites, is that I hope people can recognise and give credit to the developer or recognise the real source of information. As for 3rd party retailer information site, I apologise if it cause any inconvenience but they do have certain good information. As per advice by the moderator, I do some clean up**

The video only works for earlier versions...any version above .60 doesnt work this way of changing UI , then build.prop editor is needed...to change language ...also rooting version above .60d version is still experimental and system 1 locks after .60d version...

Knightng: You are a very experienced Mibox user. I live in Singapore. I have just got a latest Mibox (MDZ-09-AA). I have connected to power and TV. Everything seems to work fine. Few questions from me.
1. It asks me to upgrade from 1.3.53 to 1.3.61. Should I do it? Is it recommended to upgrade to the latest version all the time?
2. If I don't root or jailbreak my Mibox, what can I do with it? I like sports, live broadcasting ones. Can I still get those content with the original Mibox?
3. There are many wonderful apps recommended in this forum for new user like me. However, I don't know how to download and install them? Instruction are hidden from me. I seem to need to get 500 points first to view the instruction. I don't even know where and how to get points?? Please help!!
4. before I root/jailbreak the box, is there way that I can save a copy of the system/image somewhere. So, if I manage to screw up the box, I can always get back to the original Mibox?

Thanks so much for your help!

Knightng: You are a very experienced Mibox user. I live in Singapore. I have just got a latest Mibox ...

Just to share:
1. I am already on 1.3.61, but don't upgrade till 1.3.65. You can refer to my latest experience I am sharing on WIFI ADB/ADB WIFI. Refer to link: http://en.miui.com/thread-67641-1-1.html

2. Actually jailbreak it will be enough. If you require to watch US and EU channel, which identify the location of the DNS server, than you need to install those VPN app. There are other way then VPN apps too. But I am currently not using any  VPN software. The China TVs station do stream live telecast on sports too.

3. You can find a lot channel from Shafa market apps. Google them. I will send you a few links via pm later too. Install them later upgrade them.

4. Actually the after rooting the box then you will need to backup them. In an unroot state the box system partition is not easy damage by the installer apk. In other to backup the image of the system partitions you will need to root it.

Knightng, I think you gave me too much credit on this Mibox thing and the general android thing.
Thank you for the useful information you have provided. However, I'm still confused. I think you need to take me back to the very basic.
Regarding WiFi, my wifi connection is working fine as is now. Are you saying that if I upgrade to 1.3.61, my wifi connection will not work anymore?
I have no intention to use VPN. So, I will probably keep using the the current DNS.
If you can PM me your contact number, it will be the best! We can have a conversation to cover all my questions and I can get all the helps from you! Thank you so much for your help!

Tha ...

Sorry.. for the confusion.

When you upgrade to any version of the firmware/ROM on the box, the Wifi will always work.

But if you doing a lot of exploring or changes or backup or installation using ADB(Android Debug Bridge). Then it will be better connect your box through ADB Wifi instead through the USB.

I am sending a PM on the guide on the apps to install and in sequence to install to start jail breaking it.
