Hello MIUIers,

Fast charging is a must have feature in today’s phones. It keeps our batteries topped up through busy days. However, there are a variety of different standards from different companies. Some only work with specific cables and chargers, while others use higher voltages. It can all get a bit confusing, so we’re here to make sense of it.

In a nutshell, fast charging increases the current sent to the battery to fill up its capacity quicker. The basic USB specification only sends 0.5 amps (A) of current using 5 volts (V) for just 2.5 watts (W). Fast charging technologies boost these figures. Huawei’s 10V/4A SuperCharge2.0 produces 40W and Samsung’s 9V/1.7A Adaptive Fast Charging produces 15W of juice. All fast charging services share a common theme — more power.

That’s just the basic overview. How a battery actually charges up is more complicated. Before we get to that, let’s look at the differences between all of these fast charging standards in more detail.

How Fast Charging Works

Every smartphone has a battery, and every battery delivers power in more or less the same way. Cells consisting of two electrodes (one positive and one negative) and an electrolyte catalyze reactions that convert compounds into new substances. Over time, ions — atoms with too few or too many electrons — form in the electrodes, driving a flow of electrons to the battery’s negative outer terminal and supplying your phone with an electric charge.

In nonrechargable batteries, those chemical reactions occur only once. But in the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that power smartphones, the reactions are “reversible.” When the battery discharges, the chemical reaction produces electricity, and when the battery recharges, the chemical reactions absorb power.

Smartphone batteries charge when a current passes through them. Greater current and higher voltages charge batteries faster, but there’s a limit to what they can take. The charge controller (IC) protects against dangerous spikes in current.

The controller chip regulates the overall flow of electricity into and out of the battery. Generally speaking, lithium-ion controllers define the current (in amps) at which the battery charges by measuring the battery’s cell current and voltage and then adjusting the current flowing in. Some use a DC to DC converter to change the input voltage, and fancier integrated circuits adjust the resistance between the charger input and the battery terminal to ramp the current flow up or down.

1.png

Unless you’re still rocking a Palm Pilot from the early ’90s, chances are your smartphone recharges via USB cable. There’s a really good reason: Besides the fact that USB cables are relatively easy to find these days, USB has a really robust, well-defined charging standard called the USB Power Delivery Specification.

The USB Implementers Forum specifies four types in total, one for each corresponding USB specification: USB 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.1. A typical USB 1.0 and 2.0 plug can deliver up to 5V/0.5A (2.5W).

ice_screenshot_20190226-101017.png

That’s the charging rate of a typical phone, and it doesn’t amount to a lot of power. An iPhone charging at 2A over USB uses 5V x 2A = 10W. The average incandescent light bulb, by comparison, draws about 40W of power. By default, USB 3.0 ports push 5V/0.9A (4.5W).

USB-C, the oval-shaped reversible plug on newer smartphones, is a different animal altogether. It’s technically capable of carrying the USB 2.0 spec, but most manufacturers opt for USB 3.1, which can potentially deliver a much higher voltage.

Many USB 3.1 devices take advantage of the USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) spec, which has a maximum power output of 20V/5A (100W). Smartphones don’t typically draw that much power — manufacturers commonly stick with a lower amperage (like 3A), but it’s a boon for USB-C laptops like the MacBook Pro and Google Chromebook Pixel.

chrome-os-69-1024x576.jpg

Slightly complicating things is the Battery Charging Specification, which deals specifically with power drawn from a USB port for charging. The most recent spec, Rev 1.2, defines three different sources of power: Standard downstream port (SDP), charging downstream port (CDP), and dedicated charging port (DCP). CDP, the spec in modern smartphones, laptops, and other hardware, can supply up to 1.5A.

Fully compliant smartphones and chargers respect the limits of USB 2.0 and BC1.2, but not all phones and chargers are compliant. That’s why, generally speaking, smartphones always default to the lowest charging speed.

The USB specs are more like guidelines than dictum, though. Fast-charging standards like Qualcomm’s Quick Charge and Samsung’s Adaptive Fast Charging exceed the USB spec’s voltage parameters, but on purpose — that’s why your phone is able to recharge in minutes, rather than hours.

Type of Fast Charging

Qualcomm Quick Charge

The most common fast charging standard is Qualcomm's Quick Charge because of the widespread nature of the company's chipsets. Quick Charge 2.0 and 3.0 are the two type of fast charging you're most likely to see now, with Quick Charge 4+ on the horizon. Each standard is backward compatible with the previous one, so older cables and adapters will still work.

maxresdefault.jpg

Quick Charge 2.0 bumps up the voltage at intervals of 5V, 9V, and 12V. Quick Charge 3.0 can boost voltage across a broader range, varying dynamically from 3.2V to 20V, though peak power for both standards is 18W. That means phones like the LG G6 can reach an 80 percent charge in just 35 minutes.

Quick Charge 4+ narrows the voltage range while pumping up the amperage. You get 5V at between 4.7A to 5.6A, or 9V at 3A. Quick Charge 4+ devices use USB-C ports and are compliant with USB Power Delivery (see the section Beyond Your Phone below). They also have a second power management chip, allowing up to 28W of power without overheating. We haven't tested any Quick Charge 4+ phones yet, but theoretically it allows them to go from zero to 50 percent charged in just 15 minutes.

Quick Charge is an optional feature available with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors. So just because a phone has a Qualcomm chip doesn’t mean it is Quick Charge compatible. Even so, a wide range of phones boast Quick Charge support, including the LG V40, Xiaomi Mi 8, Samsung Galaxy Note 9, HTC U12 Plus, and many more.

MediaTek Pump Express

Certain MediaTek-powered phones use the company's Pump Express standard. Like Qualcomm Quick Charge, Pump Express comes in different versions on different devices.

Pump Express+ and Pump Express 2.0 are the older standards. Both focus on varying voltage to increase charging speed, while bumping current up to 3A or 4.5A. With Pump Express+ you get fixed intervals of 5V, 7V, 9V, and 12V, which means you can charge the average MediaTek-powered phone's battery from zero to 75 percent in 30 minutes.

Screen-Shot-2015-05-14-at-10.45.00-pm.png

Pump Express 2.0 has a wider range between 5V and 20V, on par with Quick Charge 3.0. Pump Express 3.0 supports USB-C PD and varies the voltage in a narrower range, between 3V to 6V, while upping the current to 5A, potentially letting a device go from zero to 70 percent in 20 minutes.

The newest Pump Express 4.0 standard supports 5A of current as well as USB Power Delivery 3.0 with greater efficency and better heat management. It works with any smartphone containing a MediaTek Helio P60 chipset and is able to charge to 75 percent in 30 minutes.

Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging

Samsung's Adaptive Fast Charging isn't as commonly known as Qualcomm's more universal Quick Charge, but works in a similar manner to the above standards by bumping up voltage and/or amperage. As you might imagine, it only works with certain Samsung devices and with compatible adapters that push out 5V/2A for older micro USB phones and 5V/3A or 9V/2A for USB-C, along with compatibility for USB Power Delivery.

chrome-os-69-1024x576.jpg

Phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (which can charge to 50 percent in 40 minutes) support both Adaptive Fast Charging and Qualcomm Quick Charge, making it easier to find a compatible charger.

Oppo Super VOOC Flash Charge

VOOC is Oppo's proprietary fast charging standard and naturally, you'll only find it on compatible Oppo phones like the Find 7a and R7. Unlike Quick Charge, VOOC operates by increasing current rather than voltage. With a compatible adapter and cable, the flash charge circuit is able to transfer a 4A current at 5V, letting your phone charge from zero to 75 percent in 30 minutes.

chrome-os-69-1024x576.jpg

Naturally, it has a thermal management chip to keep temperatures low while charging, so you don't have to worry about overheating.

OnePlus Dash Charging

Dash Charging on the OnePlus should sound familiar, because it's licensed form Oppo, so it works the same as VOOC, bumping up amperage to 5V/4A to achieve an output of 20W.

chrome-os-69-1024x576.jpg

On a phone like the OnePlus 5T, you can charge up to 60 percent in 30 minutes.

Huawei SuperCharge

Like most charging technologies, Huawei SuperCharge works by varying voltage and amperage. With compatible adapters and cables, you're able to get an output of 5V/1A (5W), 5V/2A (10W), 9V/2A (18W), or 4.5V/5A (22.5W).

Huawei-Mate-10-SuperCharge-safety-00.jpg

You can charge to 58 percent in 30 minutes on compatible devices like the Mate 10 Pro.

Anker PowerIQ

Anker's PowerIQ fast charging is a bit different in that it doesn't come built into the phone itself. Rather, it works with most phones that have fast charging circuits. PowerIQ identifies the connected device and varies voltage output for optimized charging speeds at intervals of 5V/1A, 5V/2.4A, 5V/2A, 9V/2A, and 12V/1.5A, essentially the same as Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0.

chrome-os-69-1024x576.jpg

You'll find PowerIQ on many Anker power banks and AC adapters. Power IQ 1.0 can output at 12W, while Power IQ 2.0 can handle up to 18W. For a phone like the Galaxy S8, you're looking at a charging speed of 2 hours to 100 percent for IQ 1.0, and 1 hour, 30 minutes for IQ 2.0.

How to fast charge a Lithium-ion battery

Now that we’ve covered the standards, let’s delve into how fast charging actually speeds up a battery’s charging cycle. Lithium-ion batteries used inside smartphones and other electronic gadgets don’t charge in a linear fashion. The charging cycle is broken into two distinct phases.

The first is the increasing voltage, or constant current phase. The battery voltage steadily increases from as low as 2V up to its peak of around 4.2V as it charges up. This varies depending on the exact battery. The battery draws the highest peak current during this phase, which remains constant until the battery voltage peaks.

The voltage then becomes constant and the current begins to fall. Batteries that charge beyond this point draw less current and therefore charge slower. This is why the first 50 or 60 percent of your phone charges considerably faster.

1.png

Fast charging technologies exploit the constant current phase. Pumping as much current as possible into the battery before it reaches its peak voltage. Therefore, fast charging technologies are most effective when your battery is less than 50 percent full, but have little to no effect as you pass 80 percent. Incidentally, constant current charging is the least detrimental period to the battery’s long-term health. Higher constant voltage, along with heat, is detrimental to battery life.

Finally, the amount of voltage and current passed to the battery is controlled via a charge controller circuit inside the phone. Coupled with temperature and voltage sensors, the controller can manage the amount of current to optimize the battery’s charge speed and long-term health.

Fast charging at high voltage?

Some of you may have spotted an apparent issue here. If lithium-ion batteries have a typical voltage around 3 to 4.2V, isn’t it dangerous to use higher voltage chargers?

Ordinarily this would be the case, but smartphone circuits step voltage down and current up. This keeps the amount of power transferred the same (P = IV), but moves the voltage into the correct range. And no, fast charging cables don’t do AC voltage conversion. If you look on the back of the charger, you’ll be able to spot the little dashed DC current icon ⎓. USB is always a DC power delivery system.

High voltage fast charging circuits use a switch-mode step-down power supply, also known as a buck inverter. This circuit takes a high DC voltage and converts it down to a lower DC voltage. Ideally, it also multiplies the current by the inverse amount thanks to its “charge pump” characteristics. It’s essentially a switch toggling the input voltage to charge up a capacitor with lots of current.

chrome-os-69-1024x576.jpg

Stepping down from 10V/1A to 5V ideally yields 2A current after the converter. In the real world, there is always some loss associated with these conversions (typically these are above 90 percent efficient), dissipated as heat. Switch-mode power supplies also typically waste less energy than a linear regulator.

Why use higher voltages?

There are two main reasons to use higher voltages. First, switch-mode power supplies are more efficient than linear regulators which decrease voltages via heat dissipation. This is especially important for keeping our phones and their batteries cool.

The second relates to power loss over USB cables, particularly longer ones. A resistor, such as a length of wire, drops a voltage based on the current passing through it (Ohm’s law V=IR). Transmitting the same power using a higher voltage and lower current loses less of power over the length of the cable. This is more efficient and why the main power grid is hundreds of volts and not 5V.

chrome-os-69-1024x576.jpg

However, the trade-off is that buck converters are more readily current-limited than linear regulators. The maximum output power depends on the inductor size, capacitor and voltage ripple, as well as the switching frequency, in addition to the power capabilities of the transistors. It’s only possible to reach very high currents via a more traditional linear voltage regulator. This is why some of the low voltage 5V fast charging technologies, like those from Huawei and OPPO, offer more total power than higher voltage buck-switching versions from Qualcomm and Samsung.

Wrap up

Fast charging encompasses a range of different possible technologies, each with their own pros and cons. This is partly why there are so many different standards on the market, as companies take their own approaches to speed up charging and maximize battery longevity.

A few generations ago, high voltage charging was becoming the norm and now technologies are implementing lower controlled voltages and high currents to boost speeds even further. However, this necessitates thicker cables and adds another compatibility headache.

USB Power Delivery is already pretty widely adopted. It will likely form the backbone of all USB charging standards going forward, though we will likely see companies experiment with their own even faster solutions on top of supporting this universal standard.

Nice detailed list of all of out current fast charging options. I would really love it if Xiaomi would abandon the high heat slower charge rate of QC even at its latest 4+ version in favor of the much cooler and faster Super VOOC. It might require specific hardware to work but for a 75% charge in half the time of QC while not damaging the battery so much with such a large increase in temperature Super VOOC is definitely the way to go and it is pretty much the only thing that Oppo/Vivo/One Plus do better than everybody else including our Xiaomi.
