Android L vs iOS 8 vs Windows Phone 8.1 vs Blackberry 10

Interface:
Android L:
  • Google has introduced a new 'Material Design' look for Android,UI is largely flat, but quite pleasant visually.
  • Android L brings more depth to the operating system's appearance using shadows, and also automatically generates touches of colour based on the content being displayed.

Above: The dialler in Android L is a good example of the new design. It uses circles instead of squares, and is brighter and lighter overall.

IOS 8:
  • The design of iOS 8 is mostly unchanged from the design of iOS 7,which is no surprise as it was iOS 7 that brought the major design changes.iOS 8 has that flat design.

Windows phone 8.1:
  • Same Metro tiles introduced from WP7 but this time with Customization(lockscreen, homescreen(transperent tiles).

Blackberry 10:
  • Swipe gesture os most probable inspired from Meego.

Winner: Depends upon your personal opinion

Lock screen:
Android L brings a new lockscreen.
  • In addition to being able to see notifications, you'll also be able to swipe up to unlock, swipe right to launch the dialler or swipe left to launch the camera.
  • Google uses drop shadows to emphasize things in the foreground. So when you tap a notification on the lock screen,it comes forward and casts a shadow. Its a nice graphical look.

iOS 8,the lock screen is unchanged from iOS 7,offering notifications, slide right to unlock and slide up to access the camera. There's no way to quickly access the dialler, though.

Wp 8.1,Lock screen can customizable to some degree. You can set any number of apps to display on the lock screen, along with the time, date, your next appointment, and the number of unread emails from multiple accounts.Microsoft published a lock-screen customization app(announced at Build conference),allowing Windows Phone users to create the sort of radically different launcher experiences that Android users can download.

Blackberry 10:
  • Lockscreen shows the time and date, notifications, unread messages and upcoming calendar events. There's a button to launch the camera straight from the lock screen to grab a quick snap, just hold down on the icon for three seconds.
  • What we can't do from the lockscreen is jump straight into a new message, email or other notification.Instead you have to unlock the handset in the normal way and then slide into the BlackBerry Hub.Kind of work

Winner: Android L.

Home screen:
Android L home screen looks same like its predecessor only change we can see is icons we can add folders, widgets etc.

iOS 8 home screen also looks exactly like its predecessor(No change at all).

Microsoft redesigned its Windows Phone 8.1 Live Tiles so that on the Start screen, some would be transparent windows overlaid on a background image of your choosing. We can pin music, specific people, and even websites to the Start screen.
It becomes messy if you didnt aggranged tiles properly. So,personal touches are required

BlackBerry 10 homescreen is comprised of '8 Active Frames',technically mini-applications,which give you an overview of information from a particular app and launch the full version when tapped.

Winner: Windows phone 8.1

Apps Drawer:
Android L comes with Apps drawer same like its predecessor(alphabetical order). Many times its hard to found installed app.

iOS doesnt have app drawer from start that tradition doesnt change either(iOS 8 doesnt have apps drawer) instead of apps drawer apps are installed start to home screen same Android problem, finding specific app is somewhat hard.

WP 8.1 comes with app drawer,Where apps are arranged in alphabetical order, unlike Android L they are seperated with Alphabets. So finding installed apps is lot easier.

Blackberry 10 Swiping from right to left on the homescreen will take you to the app list, with 16/12 apps on the screen depends on device.technically its not app drawer almost ressembles to iOS style.

Winner: Windows Phone 8.1

Soft keys:
Google has ditched the traditional look of the Android soft keys at the bottom of the screen and has adopted something rather more stylish for Android L:
Home button= circle.
multitasking menu= square.
back button=reversed arrow that looks like it has been lifted from a 1980's tape player or VCR unit.

iOS doesnt have soft keys from start that tradition doesnt change either(iOS8 doesnt have soft keys).

Microsoft played well with WP 8.1 by introducing soft keys because oems like htc doesnt want to build whole new design for wp instead they are using their android flagship design.(cost efficient).

Blackberry 10 doesnt have soft keys.

Winner: Android L.

Notificatoins and toggels:
Android L:
  • Notifications now look a lot like Google Now's card-based system.Notifications are displayed directly on the lock screen, and tapping a card allows you to unlock the device and jump straight to that area. You can even expand cards to see more details, such as a list of emails, with the phone still in its locked state(If you don't like the idea of people being able to snoop on your personal messages then you can enable a feature which locks away the detailed info).

  • If your phone is unlocked and you're involved in another activity, such as browsing emails or playing a game, the call details appear at the top of the display. You can accept or reject the call without having to pause what you're currently doing.

  • Android L redesigned the way toggels look and use.

iOS 8:
  • Notifications have improved. They're now interactive,so you'll be able to reply to text messages, accept calendar invitations, snooze reminders and even Like Facebook statuses you're tagged in without even having to leave the app you're in.You can already swipe them to automatically go to the relevant app,but you can't swipe to dismiss them.

  • The notifications centre that is accessed by swiping down from the top, also available via the lock screen.

  • iOS 8 comes with control centre(swipe from down to up) same like iOS 7(Control centre = toggels in android).

Windows phone 8.1:
  • Action Center, where we can find every notification.just like android only difference is you only get four toggels(which can be changed) instead of many.

  • Metro live tiles also display notifications but problem is you want to search which metro live tile has notification.

Blackberry 10:
  • Notifications are find by swiping from left to right under Blackberry hub.

  • Swipe from top to down toggles will appear.

Winner:Notifications: Draw between Android L and iOS 8.
                  Toggels: iOS 8.

Widgets:
Android L provides alot of widgets which can be placed on homescreen.
Lock-screen widgets have been removed entirely,so if you're a fan of browsing your emails without unlocking your phone, then you might be disappointed.

iOS 8 extensions is 'Today extensions' which are actually widgets that can be chosen to appear in the 'Today' view in iOS 8's Notification Centre.
Widgets and other extensions are much more restricted in iOS 8 compared with Android, though.Apple is keen to keep its operating system secure, and won't allow developers to release apps that are just widgets,or just keyboards(yep, iOS 8 allows third-party keyboards for the first time).

Windows phone 8.1 doesnt have widgets but metro tiles functions same like widgets.

Blackberry 10 doesnt have widgets

Winner: Android L.

Personal Assistant:
Android L comes with Google now, nothing new compare with its predecessor.

iOS 8 comes with Siri,Apple has partnered with Shazam to give Siri sound-recognizing powers. And you can start talking to her without having to hold down the home button: just say “Hey, Siri!"  Even better? Siri also displays the text of what you're saying as you say it, and she's become fluent in 22 languages.

WP 8.1 comes with Cortana, named after the AI construct from the Halo video game series.
  • Cortana can do everything what siri, google now capable of.In addition One clever thing Microsoft built into Cortana is its "Notebook" feature. This is the personal digital assistant’s notebook that contains notes about you:what you like, who's in your family, and your favorite places to eat.Cortana uses this information to give you more accurate results. But though it's Cortana's notebook, you're the one who can acurate it.So if you don't want Cortana knowing something about you,you can simply delete that information from the Notebook.

Blackberry 10 comes with Blackberry assistant, same like anyother personal assistant out there

Winner: Cortana of Windows phone 8.1

Multitasking:

Android L brings multi-tasking to a new level for its users. Now,open apps will appear in cards in a carousel, which you can flow through by sliding up or down on the screen. To close an app, swipe the card to the left or right.
What's cool, and something that iOS can't do yet,is some apps will show multiple cards depending on how you’re using them. For example,if you've got multiple tabs open in Chrome, you'll see each of them as an individual card on the multi-tasking screen.

Multi-tasking in iOS 7 was already pretty good, but
iOS 8 has taken it a step further by adding recent and favourite contacts to the screen when you double click the home button to access the multi-tasking menu. These contacts appear in a swipable list along the top,to allow you to quickly and easily call, text or FaceTime call that person.

WP 8 users can access the multitasking screen by pressing and holding the physical back button on their phone. Now,in
WP 8.1 users can simply drag an app down on the multitasking screen to close it.It's a small feature, but a nice one.

Blackberry 10 homescreen acts like Multitasking same like Meego os.

Winner: iOS 8.

Browser:
Android L default browser Chrome, now has been upgraded. It offers a new fluid design with the different parts of its UI changing size to give you easier access to the most relevant options. Its performance has also been tweaked and the GUI rendering has been fixed at 60fps making scrolling around appear extra smooth.

iOS 8 encouraging more third-party extensions for Safari on mobile.Touching your home key gets you into your 1Password account, where the service has detected the page you're on and offered up the credentials. Just a tap, and you're on your way. Previous iterations of the 1Password app meant you had to use their browser for such things, or access your credentials and navigate back to Safari.

Below: use of 1Password account.

WP 8.1 provides Internet explorer 11,big new features are all stolen from the desktop version and this is a very good thing.Users can now access open tabs on other Windows devices, such as desktops and tablets, right on their Windows Phone.
But best of all are the under the hood improvements that you’ll take advantage of every day, even though you can’t tell they’re there. These include support for open web standards like WebGL and HTML5 videos. In short you can view youtube site in broswer as youtube app.

Blackberry 10 Stock Browser supports Flash. It also allows access to the Reader mode, which strips out all the pictures and ads and gives you a single, lean look at the text on the page.Unfortunately, there's no way to save that view for later offline reading.

Winner: iOS 8.

Keyboard:
Android L keyboard is actually pretty nice to use. It’s got a radically new look, which seems to get away from the feeling that you need to hit a specific key.Presumably, with predictive text it’s a bit easier for the phone to correct mistakes due to typing errors. It has moved away from individual “keys” suggesting that the phone will autocorrect more typing errors. The more you type the more keyboard learns and offers smarter suggestions.

iOS 8 keyboard has new texting feature same like android, where there is a bar above the keyboard that shows you words that you’re likely to use to respond to certain incoming texts,or words you’re likely about to type as you type. The more you type the more keyboard learns and offers smarter suggestions.

WP 8.1 supports Word Flow Keyboard :Same like Android L keyboard Continous input function.
It allows users to leave their fingers on the screen and just drag the tip of their digit from one letter to the next.It predectes word what are you gonna type by combination of letters you are entering. The more you type the more keyboard learns and offers smarter suggestions.

BlackBerry 10 keyboard sports the silver frets providing additional spacing between lines and allowing for better travel between keys. These frets also act as the space for the next word prediction, and the more you type the more keyboard learns and offers smarter suggestions.

Winner: Blackberry 10.

Video calling:
Android L comes with Hangouts,Which requires all members to have a Gmail account, but is completely free and also has cross-platform functionality. On top of it high quality video.

iOS8 comes with FaceTime,Which is the most restrictive, only allowing for connections between Apple devices. If you have an iPhone, you can speak to friends via voice or FaceTime.

WP 8.1 comes with Skype,Which is available for almost any device that allows an internet connection, with cross-platform functionality. In terms of costs,two-way skype video calls are free, although a subscription is needed by at least one of the members if more participants want to participate. However,Skype often suffers from quality issues, especially if some of the participants are using cellular connection.

Blackberry 10 have only third party apps

Winner: Android L.

Cloud storage:
Android L comes with Google drive,Which provides up to 15GB of storage for free.we can then rent 100GB of additional storage for $1.99 per month,or an extra 1TB for $9.99 per month. That's pretty good value, but note that Google charges us in dollars, and some banks will charge for such foreign transaction.
  • Google has pulled its Photo sharing ability,Docs,Sheets, and Slides service into Google Drive, allowing you to share and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations seamlessly from within Drive. What's more, none of these documents will take up any of your allowance.
  • Gmail now allows you to quickly attach documents from Google Drive, while it's also possible to set attachments to automatically save to the cloud.

iOS 8 comes with iCloud,Which provides 5GB of storage for free, which is one of the lesser amounts on offer.we can then rent extra 20GB of storage for 99 cents, while 200GB will cost $3.99.
  • If you have Mac,iphone, ipad etc Apple products then iCloud is very useful.

WP 8.1 comes with Onedrive,Which provides free storage allowance to 15GB,bringing it level with Google Drive. You can add an extra 3GB by switching on automatic camera uploads in the mobile app,and an additional 5GB by referring 10 friends, all of which makes it the most generous allowance at present. If you still need extra,100GB costs £1.99 per month, and 200GB costs £3.99 per month.
  • It's biggest stand-out feature is its support for Office Online, allowing you to not only store MS Office documents in the cloud, but edit them from your web browser too.

Blackberry 10 doesnt have its own Cloud storage(third party apps)
Winner: Windoes phone 8.1

Battery: New battery monitoring tools are crucial for better battery life.
  • Android L brings with it Project Volta,Google's attempt at giving developers more visibility on what aspects of their apps are draining the most juice.it's a solid move,as it gives you a more accurate indication of how long your phone is going to last and what apps are sucking up most power.
  • Another nice touch is that when you're charging your phone, you're told how long it will take for the battery to be fully topped up.
  • we have Battery Saver mode.although the service isn’t anything particularly new plenty of OEMs already build similar features into their hardware. The idea here is to conserve battery life,so when your battery hits a certain percentage, you can set the Battery Saver mode to kick in and throttle the performance of the phone to ensure that juice lasts a little bit longer.
  • Google claims that the new battery saving mode coming with Android L will give the Nexus 5 90 minutes more battery life.

iOS 8 doesn't have battery saving mode.iPhones are notorious for their poor battery life.

Microsoft has traditionally had good luck with battery life on Windows Phone, but it's adding a lot of new capabilities for WP 8.1,To make sure users can still make it through a day, there's Battery Saver. This menu offers a breakdown of what's eating up the battery and offers settings to reduce the drain.

Blackberry 10 also doesn't have battery saving mode still its better than iOS 8.

Winner: Draw between Android L and Windows Phone 8.1

Maps:
Left to right:Google maps,Apple maps,Bing maps,Blackberry maps.

Android L provide Google Maps.
iOS 8 provide Apple maps.
WP 8.1 provide Bing maps.
Blackberry 10 provide Blackberry Maps.

Winner: Android L.

App Store:
Android L has google play,Which is second largest app store with alot of free apps, more customization.

iOS 8 has App store,Which is by far largest app store with unique titles and quality apps.
Be proud you are iOS 8 user,Be happy what apple provides you no third party browser, flie manager.
From iOS8 we can use third party keyboard.
Jailbreak: you can install illegal apps(can install paid apps for free).

WP 8.1 has Marketplace,Which 3rd largest App store after google play.
Be proud you are WP 8.1 user,Be happy what microsoft provides no third party keyboard, file manager,Microsoft allowing to install third party browsers(uc browser, opera) alongside internet explorer 11 from 8.1.
we can't install paid apps without using store means no jailbreak, root.
Windows store has alot of junk apps which microsoft started to clean.it also some exclusive apps which doesnt found in play store or apple store and yes,no Google apps.

Blackberry 10 has Blackberry world,Which has alot of junk apps.

Winner: iOS 8 with slight margin compare to google play.

Wrapup:
Android L is a great all-rounder which offers by far the greatest choice. As Apple doesn't make budget friendly mobile. We purchase Android from less than $100 to $600.Their are many OEMs which bring innovations to Android.
iOS 8 if you live luxury life or feel Apple designs are better than ever or your favourite celebrities use Apple and you want it think again because it cost a hole in your pocket but apple provides great ecosystem(Hardware + software) which is overpriced.
WP 8.1 is fresh feel in mobile operating system but you must sacrifice google apps and shift to microsoft apps(which are nice).are you fedup with this Android and ios drama, want to differentiate from crowd then WP 8.1 is your choice.
BB 10 is ofcourse most secure operating system. As we saw Apple icloud leak,if you are concern about your saftey then go with BB10 it's not that other operating system have bad security but BB10 tops all of them interms of security...

At last its your choice what matters It's not what features os provides underneath, but what you choose defines you.
