Multiple smartphone OEMs are targeting emerging markets like India and China. Societies are different and each one has their own preferences when it comes to style, software, and more. A great example of this is Xiaomi and MIUI, which is hugely popular in the United States but hasn’t been as accepted by enthusiasts in other countries. It behooves a smartphone company to cater to the region they are selling products for and Huawei has plans to do just that. The company just recently unveiled EMUI 9.0 (which is based on Android 9 Pie) and have confirmed they are adding in features that are to cater to the Indian community.

Huawei first announced their 9.0 update to EMUI back at IFA 2018 and has been testing it through its beta program. Last month we talked about a lot of these new features that are going into EMUI and learned it was headed to the Huawei Mate 10, Huawei P20, Honor 10, Honor View 10, and Honor Play. However, the company did just reveal that they were adding some specific features to the EMUI software that benefit those who purchased a Huawei smartphone in India.

Huawei calls this an “India-first” approach and their Indian R&D team is looking into adding such features as support for 28 Indian languages, customized local calendar, and deeper integration of Paytm. As of right now, they did not go into any further detail about what other features they could be adding with this India-First approach but it is clear that they are targeting the market and are hoping the additional work will help them to continue succeeding in one of the largest smartphone markets in the world.

Beyond these region-specific features, EMUI 9.0 is also improving the user experience by enhancing touchscreen responsiveness and network connectivity, adding a new password vault called HiVision, a new dashboard they are calling Digital Balance, and what they’re calling Wind Down which will attempt to help those who are feeling addicted to these devices.

Note: Huawei has stopped providing official bootloader unlock codes for its devices. Therefore, the bootloader of Honor devices cannot be unlocked, which means that users cannot flash Magisk/TWRP/custom ROMs.
