I'm waiting but not excited for it. I will take a lot of time to truly be implemented everywhere so it's useless to be excited for that, and also when it begins to work, it will be a deluxe thing for some devices, so it will take even longer than implementing it to really be able to enjoy it without needing to pay more for being the "first" users using that technology.

What is 5G?

5G is the name currently being given to the next generationof mobile data connectivity, succeeding 4G. 4G is still getting faster, but thereare several advantages to moving to 5G, which we'll explain below.

It will provide unbelievably fast broadband speeds, but moreimportantly it will have enough capacity wherever you go to perform everyfunction you want it to without a drop-in speed or connection, no matter howmany people are connected at the same time.

5G will run on a new "high-spectrum band", whichuses higher frequency signals than 4G. The new band will be much less congestedthan at present, which will be vital for use with the Internet of Things. However, signals won't be able to travel as far, so there will be needing to bemore access points positioned closer together (more on that later).

Professor Andy Sutton, principal network architect at EE,believes that the aim of 5G is to become invisible. It should be a technologythat's "just there", like electricity. It will enable devicemanufacturers to realise the Internet of Things as it will always be on andable to be tapped into without regionalisation.

How 5G works?

Wireless networks are composed of cell sites divided intosectors that send data through radio waves. Fourth-generation (4G) Long-TermEvolution (LTE) wireless technologyprovides the foundation for 5G. Unlike 4G, which requires large, high-powercell towers to radiate signals over longer distances, 5G wireless signals willbe transmitted via large numbers of small cell stations located in places likelight poles or building roofs. The use of multiple small cells is necessarybecause the millimetre wave spectrum --the band of spectrum between 30 GHz and 300 GHz that 5G relies on to generatehigh speeds -- can only travel over short distances and is subject to interferencefrom weather and physical obstacles, like buildings.

Previous generations of wireless technology have usedlower-frequency bands of spectrum. To offset millimetre wave challengesrelating to distance and interference, the wireless industry is also consideringthe use of lower-frequency spectrum for 5G networks, so network operators coulduse spectrum they already own to build out their new networks. Lower-frequencyspectrum reaches greater distances but has lower speed and capacity thanmillimetre wave, however.

The next generation telecom networks (5G)

Fifth-generation wireless, or 5G, is the latest iteration ofcellular technology, engineered to greatly increase the speed andresponsiveness of wireless networks. With 5G, data transmitted over wirelessbroadband connections could travel at rates as high as 20 Gbps by someestimates -- exceeding wireline network speeds -- as well as offer latency of1 Ms or lower for uses that require real-time feedback. 5G will also enable asharp increase in the amount of data transmitted over wireless systems due tomore available bandwidth and advanced antenna technology.

In addition to improvements in speed, capacity and latency,5G offers network management features, among them network slicing, which allowsmobile operators to create multiple virtual networks within a single physical5G network. This capability will enable wireless network connections to supportspecific uses or business cases and could be sold on an as-a-service basis. Aself-driving car, for example, would require a network slice that offersextremely fast, low-latency connections so a vehicle could navigate in realtime. A home appliance, however, could be connected via a lower-power, slowerconnection because high performance isn't crucial. The internet of things (IoT) could use secure, data-onlyconnections.

5G networks and services will be deployed in stages over thenext several years to accommodate the increasing reliance on mobile and internet-enableddevices. Overall, 5G is expected to generate a variety of new applications, uses and business cases as the technology is rolled out.

Why do we need 5G?

One of the main benefits of 5G technology over 4G will notbe its speed of delivery – which could be between 10Gbps and 100Gbps – but thelatency.
At present, 4G is capable of between 40ms and 60ms, which islow-latency but not enough to provide real-time response. Multiplayer gaming, for example, requires a lower latency than that to ensure that when you hit abutton, the remote server responds instantly.

5G's prospectiveultra-low-latency could range between 1ms and 10ms. This would allow, forexample, a spectator in a football stadium to watch a live stream of analternative camera angle of the action that matches what is going on the pitchahead with no perceivable delay. That will open the door for VR and ARapplications, too, in real-time forms.

The capacity is an importantfactor too. With the Internet of Things becomingmore and more important over time – where gadgets and objects employ smart, connected features that they have never had before – the strain on bandwidthwill continue to grow. That's why 5G is needed, to provide millions of newconnections to internet-connected tech

What is thestatus of 5G deployment?

Wireless network operators in four countries -- the UnitedStates, Japan, South Korea and China -- are largely driving the first 5Gbuildouts. Network operators are expected to spend billions of dollars on 5Gcapital expenses through 2030, according to Technology Business Research Inc.,although it is not clear how 5G services will generate a return on thatinvestment. Evolving use cases and business models that take advantage of 5G'sbenefits could address operators' revenue concerns.

The next generation telecom networks (5G)

The Internet ofThings: The device explosion

By the year 2020, it is predicted by analysts that each person in the UKwill own and use 27 internet-connected devices. There will be 50 billionconnected devices worldwide. These can range from existing technology, such assmartphones, tablets and smartwatches, to fridges, cars, augmented realityspecs and even smart clothes.

Some of these will require significant data to be shifted back and forth, while others might just need tiny packets of information sent and received. The5G system itself will understand and recognise this and allocate bandwidthrespectively, thereby not putting unnecessary strain on individual connectionpoints.

As part of a "heterogeneous network", the points, or cells, willbe used for LTE-A and the technology will be increased and refined to adapt to5G too. Cells will automatically talk to each device to provide the best andmost efficient service no matter where the user is.

Larger cells will be used in the same way as they are now, with broadcoverage, but urban areas, for example, will also be covered by multiplesmaller cells, fitted in lampposts, on the roofs of shops and homes, and eveninside bricks in new buildings. Each of these will ensure that the connectionwill be regulated and seemingly standard across the board.

Algorithms will even know how fast a device is travelling, so can adapt towhich cell it is connected. For example, a connected car might requireconnection to a macro-cell, such as a large network mast, to maintain itsconnection without having to re-establish continuously over distance, while aperson's smartphone can connect to smaller cells with less area coverage as thenext cell can be picked up easily and automatically in enough time to preventthe user noticing.

4K video streaming

Capacity will also be important for the future of video streaming. By 2030,EE predicts that 76 per cent of its data traffic will be used streaming video. And the majority of that will be 4K Ultra HD or even 8K resolutions.

The data rates of 4G can cope with that – it is expected that a 14Mbpsconnection should cope with streaming 4K video, 18Mbps for 8K – but ifeverybody was to do that at the same time, like statistics suggest, the networkwould have difficulty keeping up with demand.

Other, non-consumer sectors will also be served better with 5G, but as EEitself admits, some of the applications of a low-latency, high capacity networkis yet to even be thought of. Your kind-of need the technology in place tofigure out much of what to do with it.

And finally, another major benefit to 5G technology is that standardsand which spectrum bands will be reserved for its deployment will have beenagreed globally. Your 5G phone in the UK, for example, will work on the exactsame system and spectrum band as in the US, South Korea and whereverelse.
Well, that's the idea anyway.

What do I need toget 5G?

To connect to 5G networks, you'll need the correct hardware. Just like now,you need a phone that supports 4G in order to connect to 4G networks. Thesewill start to roll out in 2019.

The phone, tablet or any other device you use will need to have the rightchipset inside, and Qualcomm has come up with the first commercial mobile 5Gmodem, known as the X50 and set to appear in phones from 2019.

Qualcomm says the new chip will be capable of download speeds up to 5Gbps,400 times faster than the current average 4G download speeds. Qualcomm lookslike the leader currently, but things can change - especially when networks andhandsets are still some way off.

It's an interesting aside that Apple and Qualcomm are currently fighting, but Samsung and Intel are also heavily involved with 5G testing andhardware. Samsung has been working with US network Verizon on trials and thetwo are partnering on 5G tech for a commercial launch.

Intel has also been experimenting with 5G at the PyeongChang2018 Winter Olympics.

Now let’s some details information

The next generation telecom networks (5G)

What is (and what isnot) 5G, and what is the difference between 4G / LTE and 5G?

The next (5th) generation wireless network will address the evolutionbeyond mobile internet to massive IoT (Internet of Things) for the horizon2019/2020. The main evolution compared with today’s 4G and 4.5G (LTE advanced)is that beyond data speed improvements, new IoT and critical communication usecases will require new types of improved performance. For example “low latency”is what provides real-time interactivity for services using the cloud: this iskey to the success of self-driving cars for example.   Also, low powerconsumption is what will allow connected objects to operate for months or yearswithout the need for human assistance.

Unlike current IoT services that make performance trade-offs to get thebest from current wireless technologies (3G, 4G, WIFI, Bluetooth, Zigbee, etc…), 5G networks will be designed to bring the level of performance neededfor massive IoT. It will enable a perceived fully ubiquitous connected world.

5G technology is driven by 8 specification requirements

·        Up to 10Gbpsdata rate -  10 to 100x improvement over 4G and 4.5G networks
·        1-millisecondlatency
·        1000x bandwidthper unit area
·        Up to 100xnumber of connected devices per unit area (compared with 4G LTE)
·        99.999%availability
·        100%coverage
·        90% reduction innetwork energy usage
·        Up to 10-yearbattery life for low power IoT devices

5G Is Real
Verizon Wireless has won the race to 5G—sort of. On October 1,Verizon launched its "5G" home service in Houston, Indianapolis, LosAngeles and Sacramento, establishing equivocal bragging rights andsetting off a domino run of 5G network launches that will continue through nextspring.

That first network isn't the real, global mobile standardfor 5G. The first one of those will likely be AT&T's network, coming by theend of the year. (Verizon plans to switch to the global standard next year, swapping out equipment at no cost to existing customers.) This all means you'reabout to see the marketing for 5G get ramped up quite a lot, and so it's goodto know what everyone's talking about.

5G stands for fifth-generation cellular wireless, and theinitial standards for it were set at the end of 2017. But a standard doesn'tmean that all 5G will work the same—or that we even know what applications 5Gwill enable. There will be slow but responsive 5G, and fast 5G withlimited coverage. Let us take you down the 5G rabbit hole to give you a pictureof what the upcoming 5G world will be like.

1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G

The G in 5G means it's a generation of wireless technology. While most generations have technically been defined by their data transmissionspeeds, each has also been marked by a break in encoding methods, or "airinterfaces," which make it incompatible with the previous generation.

1G was analogy cellular. 2G technologies, such as CDMA, GSM,and TDMA, were the first generation of digital cellular technologies. 3Gtechnologies, such as EVDO, HSPA, and UMTS, brought speeds from 200kbps to afew megabits per second. 4G technologies, such as WiMAX and LTE, were the nextincompatible leap forward, and they are now scaling up to hundreds of megabitsand even gigabit-level speeds.

5G brings three new aspects to the table: greater speed (tomove more data), lower latency (to be more responsive), and the ability toconnect a lot more devices at once (for sensors and smart devices).

The actual 5G radio system, known as 5G-NR, won't becompatible with 4G. But all 5G devices, initially, will need 4G because they'lllean on it to make initial connections before trading up to 5G where it'savailable.

4G will continue to improve with time, as well. Theupcoming Qualcomm X24 modem willsupport 4G speeds up to 2Gbps. The real advantages of 5G will come in massivecapacity and low latency, beyond the levels 4G technologies can achieve.

That symbiosis between 4G and 5G has caused AT&T to geta little overenthusiastic about its 4G network. The carrier has started to callits 4G network "5G Evolution," because it seesimproving 4G as a major step to 5G. It's right, of course. But the phrasing isdesigned to confuse less-informed consumers into thinking 5G Evolutionis 5G, when it isn't.

Verizon's home service, which is a nonstandard form of 5G,has led its competitors to claim that it's not really 5G. But given that it offersmulti-gigabit wireless speeds and will be swiftly transitioned over to thestandard version, I'm willing to give Verizon a pass.

How 5G Works

Like other cellular networks, 5G networks use a system ofcell sites that divide their territory into sectors and send encoded datathrough radio waves. Each cell site must be connected to a network backbone, whether through a wired or wireless backhaul connection.

5G networks will use a type of encoding called OFDM, whichis like the encoding that 4G LTE uses. The air interface will be designed formuch lower latency and greater flexibility than LTE, though.

5G networks need to be much smarter than previous systems,as they're juggling many more, smaller cells that can change size and shape. But even with existing macro cells, Qualcomm says 5G will be able to boostcapacity by four times over current systems by leveraging wider bandwidths andadvanced antenna technologies.

The goal is to have far higher speeds available, and farhigher capacity per sector, at far lower latency than 4G. The standards bodiesinvolved are aiming at 20Gbps speeds and 1ms latency, at which point veryinteresting things begin to happen.

What's the Frequency?

5G primarily runs in two kinds of airwaves: below and above6GHz.

Low-frequency 5G networks, which use existing cellular andWi-Fi bands, take advantage of more flexible encoding and bigger channel sizesto achieve speeds 25-50% better than LTE, according to a presentation byT-Mobile exec Karri Kappamaki. Those networks can cover the same distances asexisting cellular networks and generally won't need additional cell sites.Sprint, for example, is setting up all its new 4G cell sites as 5G-ready, andit'll just flip the switch when the rest of its network is prepared.

The real 5G innovation is happening at higher frequencies, known as millimetre wave. Down in the existing cellular bands, only relativelynarrow channels are available because that spectrum is so busy and heavilyused. But up at 28Ghz and 39Ghz, there are big, broad swathes of spectrumavailable to create big channels for very high speeds.

Those bands have been used before for backhaul, connectingbase stations to remote Internet links. But they haven't been used for consumerdevices before, because the handheld processing power and miniaturized antennasweren't available. Millimetre wave signals also drop off faster with distancethan lower-frequency signals do, and the massive amount of data they transferwill require more connections to the landline Internet. So cellular providerswill have to install more, smaller, lower-power base stations rather than useexisting powerful microcells to offer the multi-gigabit speeds that millimetrewave networks promise.

what's 5G for?

So, Verizon wants to initially use 5G as a home internetservice, and everybody else is more focused on faster smartphones. Those usesare table stakes, just to get the networks built so more interestingapplications can develop in the future.

On a trip to Oulu, Finland, where they have a 5G developmentcentre, we attended a 5G hackathon (see the video above). The top ideas included a gamestreaming service; a way to do stroke rehab through VR; smart bandages thattrack your healing; and a way for parents to interact with babies who are stuckin incubators. All these ideas need either the high bandwidth, low latency, orlow-power-low-cost aspects of 5G.

This year, we surveyed the 5G start-ups that Verizon isnurturing in New York. At the carrier's Open Innovation Lab, we saw high-resolutionwireless surveillance cameras, game streaming, and virtual reality physicaltherapy.

Our columnist Michael Miller thinks that 5G will be mostimportant for industrial uses, like automating seaports and industrialrobots.

Driverless cars may need 5G to really kick into action, our editor Oliver Rest explained after CES this year. The first generation ofdriverless cars will be self-contained, but future generations will interactwith other cars and smart roads to improve safety and manage traffic.Basically, everything on the road will be talking to everything else.

To do this, you need extremely low latencies. While the carsare all exchanging very small packets of information, they need to do so almostinstantly. That's where 5G's sub-one-millisecond latency comesinto play, when a packet of data shoots directly between two carsor bounces from a car to a small cell on a lamppost to another car. (Onelight-millisecond is about 186 miles, so most of that 1ms latency is stillprocessing time.)

Another aspect of 5G is that it will connect many moredevices. Right now, 4G modules are expensive, power-consuming, and demandcomplicated service plans, so much of the Internet of Things has stuck withWi-Fi and other home technologies for consumers, or 2G for businesses. 5Gnetworks will accept small, inexpensive, low-power devices, so it'll connect alot of smaller objects and different kinds of ambient sensors to the internet.

What about phones? The biggest change 5G may bring is invirtual and augmented reality. As phones transform into devices meant to beused with VR headsets, the very low latency and consistent speeds of 5G will give you aninternet-augmented world, when you want it. The small cell aspects of 5G mayalso help with in-building coverage, as it encourages every home router tobecome a cell site.

We're looking forward to testing the first implementationsof 5G as soon as they are live. Every year we drive around the countryevaluating network speeds for our Fastest Mobile Networks feature, and as 5Grolls out, the results are sure to get more interesting—and exciting—than everbefore.
