Hi Redmi Note users!
It has been almost 3 years since Redmi Note series is introduced by Xiaomi. The first Redmi Note series is known as Redmi Note 3G, with dual SIM card slots by default. Then later on Xiaomi introduced Redmi Note 4G, with only one SIM card slot. After a month later, Xiaomi launched another Redmi Note 4G with dual SIM card slots. Ironically, these 3 devices look almost identical. You can't even distinguish which is 3G version or 4G version.
Hence, let me give you some briefing on the difference between these devices.
Basically Redmi Note has 3 version: Redmi Note 3G, Redmi Note 4G and Redmi Note Prime. To be more specific, we have total 9 different types of Redmi Note first version.
Here are some useful keypoints:
- TD - China Telcom, only available and usable in China
- WCDMA - China Mobile, support oversea bands and usable outside China
- Unicom - Support both China Telcom and China Mobile
- TDD-LTE - LTE bands of China Telcom, only usable in China
- FDD-LTE - LTE bands which is supported in oversea.
Before Mi India launched Redmi Note Prime, we usually called the China version device as Redmi Note 4G Dual SIM. After Redmi Note Prime is on sale in India, we decided to categorize all Redmi Note 4G Dual SIM as Redmi Note Prime, regardless it is India version or China version.
In term of design, they have the same dimension, weight, button design and color. However, there is slightly difference in their weight. Redmi Note 3G weighs 199g while Redmi Note 4G and Redmi Note Prime weighs 185g, slightly lighter than Redmi Note 3G.
Another difference is their SIM Card slots. We can see difference on the SIM card slots of these 3 phones upon open up its battery cover.

Other than the external design, we can differentiate these 3 devices with their model number and codename. The codename for these 3 devices are shown below:
- Redmi Note 3G = lcsh92_wet_jb9
- Redmi Note 4G = dior
- Redmi Note Prime = gucci
These codename can be easily found in the name of Fastboot ROM of each device. We also use this codename to recognize which device the Fastboot ROM file is for.
p/s: Don't ask me why the codename for Redmi Note 3G is so weird
Redmi Note 3G has two type of model number: HM NOTE 1TD and HM NOTE 1W
HM NOTE 1TD is Redmi Note 3G TD version for both 1GB and 2GB RAM, while HM NOTE 1W is Redmi Note 3G WCDMA version.
For Redmi Note 4G, we used to differentiate them with HM NOTE 1LTE and HM NOTE 1LTEW. 1LTE is for TDD-LTE version and 1LTEW is for FDD-LTE version. Now the latest FDD-LTE version has the same model number, which is HM NOTE 1LTE.
It could be confusing to differentiate types of Redmi Note Prime, as we have 4 types of model number.
Let's make it short by listing them in point form:
HM NOTE 1S - Redmi Note Prime (2GB RAM, India version)
HM NOTE 1S CMCC - Redmi Note 4G Dual SIM (2GB, supports China Telcom only)
HM NOTE 1S CT - Redmi Note 4G Dual SIM (1GB, support China Telcom only)
HM NOTE 1S CU - Redmi Note 4G Dual SIM (1GB, Unicom version)
This is the comparison table for these 3 devices which includes all the basic specs. Redmi Note 4G and Redmi Note Prime have lesser weight than their younger brother, Redmi Note 3G. Both of them support 4G while Redmi Note 3G don't. However, the processor performance for Redmi Note 3G seems better than his 2 elder brothers. Only Redmi Note 4G supported dual band WiFi, which are 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
I really hope that this thread will give you a very clear overview on how to differentiate the first version of Redmi Note. If you still have any doubts or questions, feel free to reply in this thread and I will try my best to explain and update the thread.
