Self-driving taxis roll out in Singapore

Nutonomy is ahead of others predecessor like Uber, Google

Nutonomy has begun the world’s first consumer trial ofdriverless cabs in Singapore - the first self-driving taxis anywhere in theworld. When Uber announced on 18 August that it would let the public hailself-driving taxis in Pittsburgh before the end of the month, some autonomous vehicleexperts could not believe it was happening so soon.

In fact the $60bn multinational has just been scooped byNutonomy, a small MIT spin-out whose electric self-driving cabs have alreadystarted picking up real customers in a Singapore business park. Initially, riders will use Nutonomy’s own app to summon hail a Mitsubishi i-Miev or aRenault Zoe, ramping up to a dozen vehicles in the coming months.

Founded in 2013 by ex-MIT engineers, Nutonomy announced a$3.6m funding round in January, followed swiftly by $16m in funding in May fromventure capitalists including Ford chairman Bill Ford and the Singaporegovernment.

A safety driver behind the wheel, data collection…..

Like Uber’s upcoming rides, this is a controlled experimentwith a safety driver behind the wheel and a limited service area. Nevertheless,it is the first time anywhere in the world that anyone will be able to hitch alift from a robotic vehicle on public roads. The company will not be chargingfor the rides.

The main reason behind any charges from riders is to collectdata. The pilot is going to allow us to collect technical data, but equallyimportantly, it’s going to allow us to find out if people enjoy riding indriverless cars.  When people get intothe car, some will love it, some will be indifferent and some won’t like it. Buthow many won’t like it. We want to know that number. And Uber wants to knowthat number, too.

Like Uber and Google, Nutonomy is convinced that the realbenefits of autonomous technology will only be realised when humans never haveto touch a steering wheel or brake pedal.  The trials in the high-tech One-North businesspark are open-ended.  And they plan tokeep offering rides as long as we continue to learn new things from the data.

Technology has brought about great changes to our society. Thisself-driving taxi which rolls out in Singapore is also one of the great achievements.Yet there will be lots of development and improvement needed to be done until itis fully reliable.  Till then we have towait and see.
