Lesson 49: All About Video Recording

Greetings MIUIers,

In the last lesson, we have learned All About PCB (Printed Circuit Board) by larstas which was very informative and very useful to know about. So, in today's classroom, we are going to learn All About Video Recording!!!

Let's get started!

Introduction to video recording
The Video recording technology was invented by Charles Ginsburg and he had a research team called (Ampex) they started developing one of the first practical videotape recorder (VTR). In 1951 the first video tape recorder captured live images from television cameras by converting the camera's electrical impulses and saving the information onto a magnetic video tape. Video recorders were sold for $50,000 in 1956, and videotapes cost $300 per one-hour reel. However, prices gradually dropped over the years in 1971, Sony began selling videocassette recorder (VCR) decks and tapes into the consumer market.

The use of digital video which allowed higher quality and, much lower cost than earlier analog technology. Then after the invention of the DVD's in 1997 and Blu-ray Disc's in 2006, sales of videotape and recording equipment are decreased rapidly. The advances in computer technology allowed even personal computers can capture, store, edit and transmit digital video, and further reducing the cost of the video production,

What is video recording?

Video recording is a recording of both the visual and audible components (especially one containing a recording of a movie or television program).
The video is an electronic medium for the recording, copying, playback, broadcasting, and display of moving visual media. Video can be carried on media, including radio broadcast, tapes, DVDs, computer files etc.

Characteristics of video streams

Now we will see characteristics of video streams for video recording one by one.

  • Number of frames per second:

Frame rate, is the number of still pictures per unit of time of the video, ranges from six or eight frames per second for old mechanical cameras to 120 or more frames per second for new professional cameras. Phase Alternating Line standards (PAL) (Europe, Asia, Australia, etc.) and SECAM Sequential color with memory (France, Russia, parts of Africa etc.) specify 25 frames/s, while NTSC standards (USA, Canada, Japan, etc.) specify 29.97 frames. The film is shot at the slower frame rate of 24 frames per second, which slightly complicates the process of transferring a cinematic motion picture to video. The minimum frame rate to achieve a comfortable illusion of a moving image is about 16 frames per second.

  • Aspect ratio:

Aspect ratio describes the dimensions of video screens and video picture elements. All popular video formats are contained and so can be described by a ratio between width and height. The screen aspect ratio of a traditional television screen is 4:3, or about 1.33:1. High definition televisions use an aspect ratio of 16:9, or about 1.78:1. The aspect ratio of a full 35 mm film frame with the soundtrack (also known as the Academy ratio) is 1.375:1.

Comparison of common cinematography and
traditional television (green) aspect ratios

Pixels on computer monitors are usually square, but pixels used in digital video have non-square aspect ratios, such as those used in the PAL and NTSC variants of the CCIR 601 digital video standard, and the corresponding anamorphic widescreen formats. Therefore, a 720 by 480 pixel NTSC DV image displayed with the 4:3 aspect ratio (the traditional television standard) if the pixels are thin, and displays at the 16:9 aspect ratio (the anamorphic widescreen format) if the pixels are fat.

  • Color space and bits per pixel:

The color model name describes the video color representation. YIQ was used in NTSC television. It corresponds closely to the YUV scheme used in NTSC and PAL television and the YDbDr scheme used by SECAM television.

Example of U-V color plane, Y value=0.5

The number of distinct colors of a pixel can depend on the number of bits per pixel (bpp). A common way to reduce the amount of data required in digital video is by chroma subsampling (e.g., 4:4:4, 4:2:2). Because the human eye is less sensitive to details in color than brightness, the luminance data for all pixels is maintained, while the chrominance data is averaged for a number of pixels in a block and that same value is used for all of them. For example, this results in a 50% reduction in chrominance data using 2-pixel blocks (4:2:2) or 75% using 4-pixel blocks(4:2:0). This process does not reduce the number of possible color values that can be displayed, it reduces the number of distinct points at which the color changes.

  • Video quality:

Video quality can be measured with formal metrics like PSNR (Peak signal-to-noise ratio) or with subjective video quality using expert observation. Video quality is a characteristic of a video passed through a video transmission/processing system, a formal or informal measure of perceived video degradation (typically, compared to the original video). Video processing systems may introduce some amount of distortion or artifacts in the video signal, which negatively impacts the user's perception of a system.

  • Video compression method:

Uncompressed video delivers maximum quality with a very high data rate. A variety of methods is used to compress video streams, with the most effective ones using a Group Of Pictures (GOP) to reduce spatial and temporal redundancy. This task is known as intraframe compression and is closely related to image compression. Likewise, temporal redundancy can be reduced by registering differences between frames, this task is known as interframe compression, including motion compensation and other techniques. The most common modern standards are MPEG-2, used for DVD, Blu-ray and satellite television, and MPEG-4, used for AVCHD, Mobile phones (3GP) and the Internet.

A video file format is a type of file format which we store digital video data on a computer are any multimedia gadgets. The video is almost always stored in compressed form to reduce the file size.A video file normally contains video data in a video coding format and meanwhile audio data in an audio coding format. Usually, the container format can also contain synchronization information, subtitles, and metadata such as title. The coded video and audio inside a video file container are called the essence. A program which can decode video or audio is called a codec; playing or encoding a video file will sometimes require the user to install a codec library corresponding to the type of video and audio coding used in the file. (For example, MX Player which is available for Android devices where that player also need codec library for video and audio)

In some case video file formats, such as WebM (.webm), Windows Media Video (.wmv), and Ogg Video (.ogv), each one can only contain a few well-defined subtypes of video and audio coding formats, making it easy to know which codec will play the file. In contrast to that, some very general-purpose container types like AVI (.avi) and QuickTime (.mov) can contain video and audio in almost any format, For a number of years now, a good bet for a forward-looking, high-quality, versatile video format is h.264, aka, MPEG-4/AVC (Advanced Video Coding), though it really needs a better name. h.264 is supported by a number of important players including Microsoft, Apple, and Adobe, though in early 2011 Google dropped support for h.264 from its Chrome browser. Nowadays we have some common and popular format types, Even there are a lot of formats available but we use can see very few among them mostly like MP4, AVI, MKV,h.264, FLV.

  • AVI (Audio Video Interleave) Developed by Microsoft and introduced to the public in November 1992 as part of Windows technology, the AVI format is one of the oldest video formats. AVI files are able to run on a number of different systems like Windows, Macintosh, Linux; is also supported by popular web browsers. AVI files stores data that can be encoded in a number of different codec’s, although most commonly with M-JPEG or DivX codecs.

  • FLV (Flash Video format) Flash was originally created by a company called Macromedia which was acquired by Adobe in 2005. Older Flash video often uses the Sorenson codec, newer Flash uses h.264. At one time, websites appeared as a blank page with a message “You must download and install the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player to view this content”. it has become the most common online video viewing platform used on the Web today. Some Notable users of the Flash Video are Youtube, Yahoo! The video, VEVO, Hulu and Myspace among many others.

  • WMV (Windows Media Video) Is Developed by Microsoft and originally designed for web streaming applications, as a competitor to RealVideo. One of the big advances was the idea of streaming video — where your computer downloads only a part of a video and begins to play while the download continues — this means you don't have to wait two hours for a movie to download before you can start watching. Over the years the WMV format has grown to include support for high-definition 720 and 1080 video. To make things complicated, files that end in .wmv are usually stored in an .asf container.

  • MP4 (Moving Pictures Expert Group 4) MP4 is an abbreviated term for MPEG-4 Part 14, a standard developed by the Motion Pictures Expert Group who was responsible for setting industry standards regarding digital audio and video and is commonly used for sharing video files on the Web. The MPEG-4 video format uses separate compression for audio and video tracks; the video is compressed with MPEG-4 or H.264 video encoding, and audio is compressed using AAC compression. The MP4 file format is also another great file sharing format for the Web, MP4 file sizes are relatively small but the quality remains high even after compression. The MP4 standard is also becoming more popular than FLV for online video sharing.

  • MOV (Apple QuickTime Movie) Developed by Apple. Inc, the QuickTime file format is a popular type of video sharing and viewing format amongst Macintosh users and is often used on the Web, and for saving the movie and video files. MOV files are most commonly opened via the Apple QuickTime Player for the Macintosh Operating System. However, MOV files are not just limited to being played on Apple computers, as there is a free version of the QuickTime Player available for the Windows Operating System among many other players. Considered one of the best looking file formats, MOV files are of high quality and are usually big in file size.

We carry cameras that shoot everything from 720p HD all the way out to 4K. That variety can be somewhat confusing when you’re trying to sort out just which camera you need to rent and what resolution to actually shoot at once you’ve rented it. And that’s before you begin diving into the world of aspect ratios, too.

What’s a Resolution?
Let’s start with understanding exactly what we mean by “resolution.” Every digital video file has certain set dimensions, measured in the number of pixels. When you see something like “1920 X 1080” or 1080p, that is referring to the dimensions of that picture. In this example, it’s 1920 pixels wide, by 1080 pixels high. Then aspect ratio to consider, Most TV programming, as well as a lot of what you see online, is the aspect ratio of 16:9. If you divide 1920 by 1080, your are left with 16/9 as your end result – that is the ratio of horizontal pixels to vertical pixels. This particular aspect ratio is also known as “Widescreen” and is currently the most used on TV and the web.

Coming back to the discussion about resolutions, then we have the so-called “4K” standard for TVs, which is an actual 4000+ pixel wide. At 3840 X 2160 pixels, this ends up with an aspect ratio of 16:9, which is the same aspect ratio for HD TVs. Of course, “4K” sounds a lot sexier and, well, number-y than UHD, which is why manufacturers go ahead and stick that logo on their boxes.YouTube was the first streaming service to support streaming in UHD and they refer to it as 2160p, which is actually more accurate than 4K and is in keeping with the familiar naming scheme implemented for HD video.

Ultimately, the differences between 720p, 1080i, and 1080p resolutions are the number of lines in the resolution and the type of scanning technology. A 720p HDTV has 720 lines of pixels, as opposed to 1080 found in1080i and 1080p resolutions. However, both 720p and 1080p offer an advantage over 1080i in that they use progressive scanning, which creates a clearer image because the pixel lines in an image are scanned and assembled sequentially. The main difference between 720p and 1080p lies in the number of pixels that make up a 720p image and 1080p image. For 720p the number of pixels that make up the image is about 1 million (equivalent to 1 megapixel in a digital still camera) and about 2 million pixels for 1080p. Besides pixel density of 1080p vs 720p, there are also the factors of screen size and seating distance from the screen to take into consideration.

So next time you hear people talking about video, resolutions, formats etc, you won't be left behind.

Now let's dismiss our class here! Hope you guys have enjoyed it!
