It's my first time doing this. I read a lot of post on how to unlock bootloader for Mi Max. But some people are confused just like myself. Hence, I'm going to put up the tuorial of what I did, and manage to unlock my bootloader.

FIRST OF ALL, PLEASE CHARGE YOUR PHONE ABOVE 70%.

1) Have a Mi Account (If you don't have any).
- Do it via Mi Cloud at https://i.mi.com/
- Bind phone number and email together.
- Apply permission at Apply For Unlocking Mi Devices.
- Wait for SMS Confirmation for your permission (IT WILL TAKE A FEW DAYS).

2) Once you received your permission:
- Download MiFlashUnlock from the link as Apply For Unlocking Mi Devices.
- Log into Mi Cloud, and your device. Preferably with phone number.- Go to Settings, About Phone. Press "MIUI VERSION" 7 times to unlock Developer Option.
- Go back to settings, under System & Device, choose Additional Settings.
- Scroll down to Developer Options and enter it.
- Swipe to the right on these 3:
                Developer Option,
                OEM Unlocking,
                USB Debugging.
- Run MiFlashUnlock tool which you downloaded, and follow the instructions to put your phone into FASTBOOT.

3) You will either:
3.1 - Unlock with no problems, OR
3.2 - Failed at 50%

If you get 3.2, restart your phone by pressing the Vol - & Power button together, and let go once logo disappears.

AT THIS POINT, YOU MIGHT WANT TO BACKUP EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE FIRST. AS LATER ON IT WILL EITHER ASK YOU TO WIPE YOUR DATA OR JUST UPDATE STRAIGHTAWAY (I'VE BEEN ASKED TO WIPE MINE)

and you have to do the next step below.

3.2.1) Go to MIUI Downloads.
- Choose Brand: Xiaomi
- Choose Device: XIaomi Mi Max
- When you're in XIAOMI MI MAX page, look right beside the word XIAOMI MI MAX.
- Choose the Rom Model for your device:
a) Mi Max 32GB Global
b) Mi Max 32GB China
c) Mi Max 64GB/128GB China
- Once you choose, look at the LEFT SIDE.
- Under DEVELOPER ROM, click Full ROM Pack, and click on the DOWNLOAD FULL ROM on the right side.
- ROM zip will start downloading.

4) Once finished downloading, transferred it to internal storage/downloaded_rom of your device.

5) Open up the UPDATER app on your phone.
- Click the 3 dots on top right hand corner of the app.
- Choose update package, browse to internal storage/downloaded_rom, and choose the ZIP file which you downloaded.
- If you have backup your phone as mentioned, feel free to continue flashing the ZIP. If not, please do so. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED IN RED.

It will take quite some time for your phone to flash and reboot to set up menu. So please be patient.

6) Once loaded up, sign in to your Mi Account on your device.
- Restart step 2.

And you will succeed in Unlocking Bootloader.

Hi Sam.Bunny, some of us prefer stock untouched device. meaning, as it is. while some prefer it to be explored. by unlocking bootloader, users have the chance to root their device, install custom roms etc.

rooting the device have a lot of exposure. from the system root file browser, debloating certain apps.

few major brands have locked bootloader, and hence for them to explore their device, the bootloader needs to be unlock.

hope that clears your question.
